How Cannabinoids Work
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system that is found throughout the entire body and helps regulate our physiological, physical, and emotional stability. It has been found to have a moderating effect on pain, mood, stress, inflammation, and many other areas on the body.Endocannabinoids themselves are small molecules made by the body which interact with the ECS and bind to the receptors.
There are two main endocannabinoid receptors: CB1 receptors, which are mostly found in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and CB2 receptors, which are mostly found in your peripheral nervous system (outside your brain and spinal cord) , especially in immune cells.
Since endocannabinoids can bind to either receptor, the actual effect depends on the location of the receptor itself in either system, along with which endocannabinoid binds to it.
Cannabinoids will bind to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, where they have two courses of action. They will either mimic the natural endocannabinoids produced by the body—or they may block those receptors and limit their activity. Both courses can have a noticeable effect on the body.
CBD has been shown to have a variety of anti-inflammatory properties which are triggered when the cannabinoids bind to CB2 receptors. When CBD and THC are taken together, CBD has been shown to help suppress the negative side effects of THC by its interaction with the CB1 receptors.
One study from the European Journal of Pain showed that arthritic pain and inflammation could be reduced with a topical CBD product applied to the skin. In some treatment scenarios, patients have been known to discontinue opioid-based pain relief options in favor of CBD in order to manage chronic pain.
Additionally, autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac, affect the body’s ability to fight inflammation.
Because of the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, there has been help for patients to reduce swelling and inflammation, providing not only pain relief but prevent disease-causing inflammation. CBD has also been shown to help reduce anxiety, assist in diabetes prevention, and offer relief from cancer symptoms and neuropathy.
